Smartcash PSB: Bringing financial inclusion to rural Nigeria
The challenge
Millions of Nigerians in rural areas had no access to basic banking. Airtel Africa needed regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria to launch Smartcash, a mobile payment service bank, and had to build trust with regulators, partners and underserved communities simultaneously.
The approach
Led communications, stakeholder engagement and performance marketing for three years, coordinating a complex multi-stakeholder narrative across regulators, media and the public. Built the case for financial inclusion with evidence, persistence and consistent messaging.
The outcome
Secured Central Bank of Nigeria approval and successfully launched Smartcash PSB. Rural communities in areas like Bauchi could perform banking transactions by mobile for the first time, without travelling hours to a branch.
Reimagine Education: Connecting 300,000 children to digital learning
The challenge
Millions of children in underserved Nigerian schools had no internet access and no connection to digital learning platforms, deepening the educational divide between urban and rural communities.
The approach
Served as project and product lead on a partnership between Airtel, UNICEF and Microsoft. Coordinated stakeholder alignment across three major organisations, mapped schools for internet coverage, worked with software teams to optimise the Nigeria Learning Passport, and managed communications across all partners to ensure consistent messaging and programme visibility.
The outcome
Over 300,000 children in underserved schools gained access to quality digital education. Devices were provisioned with learning tools and schools connected to the internet, bridging the digital divide at scale.
Airtel TV: Scaling to 500,000 users in 18 months
The challenge
Airtel Nigeria needed to launch and rapidly grow a new entertainment streaming platform in a competitive market, building awareness, driving downloads and retaining users through sustained engagement.
The approach
Built and executed an integrated communications and performance marketing strategy combining PR, social media, dynamic retargeting and gamification. Developed the launch narrative and growth campaigns, maintaining consistent brand messaging while optimising for acquisition and retention metrics.
The outcome
Airtel TV reached 500,000 active users within 18 months of launch, demonstrating that a disciplined combination of strategic storytelling and data-driven performance marketing could drive rapid, sustainable growth in a new product category.
Great British Railways: Communications for a once-in-a-generation reform
The challenge
The Great British Railway Transition Team was leading one of the most complex public sector reform programmes in a generation, requiring clear communications across government, industry, passengers and media, while managing significant political and operational scrutiny.
The approach
Served as Senior Manager for Communications and Engagement, developing frameworks for major rail reform programmes including customer-facing initiatives. Contributed to simplifying fares communications and building the engagement framework for the Pay-As-You-Go pilot scheme across the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.
The outcome
Delivered clear, credible communications across a multi-stakeholder environment, supporting milestone delivery for a reform programme that attracted sustained national media attention and shaped public understanding of the future of UK rail.
Catapult a Startup: Building Nigeria's innovation storytelling ecosystem
The challenge
Nigeria's early-stage startup ecosystem lacked structured visibility, mentorship and communications support. Promising founders were building strong products but struggling to attract investment, media attention and the credibility needed to grow.
The approach
Conceived and led Catapult a Startup at Airtel Nigeria, an initiative providing early-stage founders with funding, mentorship and visibility. Developed the communications and narrative strategy for the programme and personally mentored founders through the process of articulating their value to investors and media.
The outcome
Helped launch and amplify multiple early-stage startups, including Pass.NG, which went on to revolutionise exam preparation for students across Nigeria. Established Airtel as a genuine partner to Nigeria's innovation ecosystem rather than simply a corporate sponsor.
